Thu 02 December 2021:

More than half of 18- to 29-year-old Americans say the US democracy has “failed” or is “in trouble,” according to a nationwide poll, and a significant portion also foresee the possibility of civil war.

Of the 52% polled who said they’ve lost or are losing faith in America’s democratic system, 39% described the country as a “democracy in trouble.” Another 13% of respondents called it a “failed democracy,” according to research released on Wednesday by the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School.

Of the more than 2,100 young Americans surveyed for the poll, only 7% said they believe the US is a “healthy democracy,” while another 27% consider it a “somewhat functioning democracy.”

While Democrats are about evenly divided about the health of the US democracy (44% healthy/somewhat functioning and 45% in trouble/failed), a large majority of Republicans, 70%, see it as either a democracy in trouble (47%) or failed (23%).

Those who identified as Republicans were the most concerned about the state of the United States under the leadership of Joe Biden, a Democrat with dwindling poll numbers as he struggles to confront a slew of crises, including the Covid-19 outbreak, supply chain concerns, and record inflation.

In the Harvard poll, Biden’s approval ratings among young voters fell, as they had in other recent polls. Only 46% of those polled approved of the president’s job performance, down 13% from a similar poll performed by the group in April.

The poll surveyed 2,109 interviewees between Oct. 26 and Nov. 8.

The margin of error for the total sample is +/- 3.08%.
