AFRICA’S COVID-19 CASES SURPASS 78,000

Death toll in continent rises to 2,630, recoveries above 29,000

The number of coronavirus cases in Africa exceeded 78,000 on Saturday, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in its daily update.

The death toll rose to 2,630 while recoveries reached 29,452.

South Africa recorded 13,500 cases making the rainbow nation the worst-affected in terms of the number of infections, and 247 deaths.

Egypt reported 11,200 cases and 592 deaths.

Nigeria’s death toll went up to 171, Burkina Faso and Niger 51 each, Mali 46, and Ghana 28. In Central Africa, Cameroon suffered the largest fatalities with 139, Democratic Republic of Congo 61, and Chad 48.

In East Africa, Sudan recorded the biggest number of fatalities, with 91 dead from virus-related complications. Somalia recorded 53 deaths and Kenya 45.
