Wed 11 October 2020:

The vast majority of Americans—almost 80 per cent—acknowledge Joe Biden as the winner of the presidential election while a mere 3 percent believe Donald Trump was reelected, a poll released a week after Election Day shows.

Most media organizations called the race for the Democrat based on his leads in critical battleground states.

While the race with Republican incumbent Donald Trump still remains undecided in three states as of Tuesday evening, Biden – who needed 270 Electoral College votes to win – had 279 of those votes to 214 for Trump, according to Edison Research.

A whopping 79 per cent of American adults think Biden won the Nov. 3 election – including more than half of Republicans – according to a Reuters/Ipsos national opinion survey conducted from Saturday to Tuesday.

Meanwhile, only 3 per cent believe Trump won, 13 per cent said the election has not been decided yet and 5 per cent said they do not know.

Most media organizations called Biden the winner on Saturday after he garnered 279 Electoral College votes of the 270 needed, compared to Trump who had 214 electoral votes, according to Edison Research.

However, the results are not complete in three battleground states, and Trump has refused to concede, instead filing lawsuits in crucial states over ballot counting.

Among those surveyed, almost all Democrats said Biden won and more than half—six in 10— Republicans agreed.

The poll was a portion of a larger survey gathering Americans’ opinions before news organizations called the race, beginning on Friday and continuing through Tuesday.

According to the broader survey, 72 per cent of Americans said the election loser must concede, and 60 per cent believe there will be a peaceful transition of power from the Trump administration to Biden on inauguration day on Jan. 20.

In addition, 70 per cent of Americans, including 83 per cent of Democrats and 59 per cent of Republicans, believe that local election officials “do their job honestly.”

Edison Research conducts exit polling for Reuters and other mainstream news organizations and called Biden the victor on Saturday after his lead over Trump in Pennsylvania grew and put him on track to surpassing 270 electoral votes.

Trump appeared to have a solid chance of winning on election night after winning Ohio, Florida and Texas, but the tide turned in favor of Biden when the Democrat won Wisconsin and Michigan.

The poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the United States. It gathered responses from 1,363 U.S. adults in all, including 469 respondents who took the poll between Saturday afternoon and Tuesday.

The poll has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of 5 percentage points.
