Satellite imagery released on Sunday appeared to show minor damage to the building.

Sun 29 January 2023:

Israel carried out a clandestine drone strike targeting a defense compound in Iran according to U.S. officials and people familiar with the operation”, Wall Street Journal reported.

Some reports said several facilities were hit around Iran within a period of a few hours. Iran’s IRNA news agency reported a fire at an oil refinery in the northern city of Tabreez.

According to Iran’s defence ministry the drone attack was “unsuccessful”, with one drone shot down by air defence, and two blowing up, when they were “caught in defence traps”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian called the blast a cowardly strike.

“Such actions cannot impact the determination and intent of our experts for peaceful nuclear progress,” he said, according to government news service PadDolat.

The Israeli military declined to comment.

Israel’s latest attack occurs as American and Israeli officials are debating new strategies to counter Iran’s disruptive activities, notably the growing military collaboration with Russia.

William Burns, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, went unannounced to Israel this week, according to persons who were there, to talk about Iran and other regional matters.

The United States and Israel will continue their discussions on Iran and other regional issues when Secretary of State Antony Blinken travels to Israel on Monday.

The main target of Saturday’s strike was a warehouse behind an Isfahan mall that Iran claimed was an ammunition storage facility. Witnesses posted video of the explosion on social media, showing a small explosion above a building that appeared to cause minor damage.

The building appeared to have minor damage, according to satellite imagery released on Sunday.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to arrive in Israel on Monday to continue the U.S.-Israel talks about Iran and other regional issues.
