NASA is well-known for releasing stunning photographs and films from orbit. This time, the space agency stunned the internet by sharing a video of a “pepperoni” storm raging above Jupiter.

The video is of an infrared view of Jupiter’s north pole. “The movie utilises imagery derived from data collected by the Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) instrument aboard our NASA solar system mission Juno.”

The yellow regions are warmer because they are deeper into Jupiter’s atmosphere, while the dark parts are colder because they are higher up in Jupiter’s atmosphere, according to the space agency.

“In this clip, the highest “brightness temperature” is around 260K (about -13°C) and the lowest is around 190K (about -83°C).

The “brightness temperature” is a measurement of the radiance, at 5 µm, travelling upward from the top of the atmosphere towards Juno, expressed in units of temperature,” states NASA in the caption.

On National Pizza Day, the video was posted.

The video has received over 1 million views since it was shared. The video has gone viral, with thousands of comments from internet users. An Instagram user commented, “Always beautiful and massive Jupiter!”

“Extra large pepperoni pizzaaa! Also hot and spicy,” wrote another Instagram user. “This is creative. I see what you did there,” posted another. “Nice,” commented a third. Many also posted fire emoticons to showcase their reactions.
