At least 67 people were injured, 41 others still missing as heavy rains triggered landslides, floods this week

The death toll from floods and landslides caused by torrential rains in Nepal rose to 111, with 41 others still missing, a home ministry official said Thursday.

The latest fatalities occurred over the last two days in Lamjung and Gulmi districts that were battered by heavy rains, which triggered floods and landslides, Bed Nidhi Khanal, an undersecretary at the ministry, told Anadolu Agency over phone.

He said 67 people also sustained injuries in floods and landslides across the country.

The country’s emergency authorities on Thursday warned that water levels on several rivers could reach the danger mark as heavy rains hit the upstream areas.

On Wednesday, a flash flood on the Dordi Khola river in Lamjung killed four construction workers at a hydro project and left six others missing, according to local Kantipur newspaper.

Local media also reported that parts of Rautahat, a district along Nepal’s southern border with India, were inundated again following heavy rains.

The government has come under fire for slow recovery after the floods and landslides that devastated huge swathes of land last week.

Hundreds of Nepalese people die each year from floods and landslides during the country’s monsoon season, which runs between June and September.
