Thu 19 May 2022:

Nine additional cases of monkeypox virus infection have been discovered in Portugal, bringing the total number of cases to 14, while the first seven cases were reported in Spain on Thursday.

Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that is similar to smallpox in humans but is less severe. Fever, headaches, and skin rashes are some of the symptoms.

The outbreaks in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, and the United States have sparked concern because the viral disease, which spreads by close contact and was initially discovered in monkeys, is primarily found in West and Central Africa, with sporadic cases abroad.

The nine patients reported in Portugal are stable and being closely examined, according to the Portuguese health authority DGS, which added that scientists are attempting to “identify chains of transmission and potential new cases”.

According to DGS, the majority of cases in Portugal were reported in and around the city, Lisbon.

Spain’s first seven confirmed cases and 22 possible cases were all reported in Madrid’s central region, according to local health officials.

“It’s possible we will have more cases in the coming days,” Madrid regional public health chief, Antonio Zapatero, told Onda Cero radio station.

Those experiencing “suspicious symptoms,” such as skin rashes or ulcerated lesions, have been advised to avoid direct physical contact with others by the Portuguese health authority.
