Wed 08 December 2021:

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s president, stated on Wednesday that during his visit to Qatar from December 6-7, he discussed the role of private corporations in the administration of Kabul airport.

“The joint operation of Afghan gateways has been discussed on a visit to Doha. Qatar and Turkey have determined that private companies will handle it. These companies will negotiate among themselves and with Taliban (under UN sanctions for terrorism) representatives,” Erdogan told journalists on board a plane on his way back to Turkey, as quoted by Turkish news agency Anadolu.

Given the necessary conditions, especially in terms of security, “the Kabul airport project will be carried out,” he added.

The Kabul airport, which is situated in a mountainous area, is a vital piece of infrastructure for international aid groups, diplomatic and military missions to gain access to Afghanistan.

Erdogan’s visit to Qatar underscores Turkey’s desire to repair ties with the Gulf’s energy-rich region. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, paid his first visit to Turkey in years last month.
