Mon 01 November 2021:

On Monday, Germany’s Covid-19 incidence rate surpassed 150 for the first time since May, raising fears of a widespread fourth wave as the country grapples with a new administration.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) health organization, the number of new infections per 100,000 persons increased to 154.8 in the last seven days, up from 110.1 a week ago.

On Sunday, outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel called for immediate action to address the “very worrying” trend, emphasizing that Germany could not afford to wait until a new administration is in place.

According to the RKI, 9,658 new Covid-19 cases were reported across the country in the last 24 hours, including 23 deaths.

Germany has so far ruled out mandatory vaccinations, preferring to encourage as many people as possible to get the vaccine on their own will.

However, with only 66.7 percent of the population properly vaccinated, the vaccination effort has ground to a halt.

According to a Forsa poll conducted for the health ministry and released Thursday, 65 percent of unvaccinated respondents said there was “no way” they take the Covid vaccine and 23 percent were “reluctant.”

Simultaneously, medical personnel have reported a new surge of infected persons to hospitals, the majority of whom are unvaccinated.

According to the German Hospital Society, hospitalizations due to Covid have surged by 40% in the last week, with intensive care admissions up 15%.
