Fri 24 December 2021:

A Moscow court smacked Google with a hefty fine on Friday. This was done because the tech giant failed to remove content that was considered illegal. The court’s press service announced on Telegram that Google has been fined $98 million.

The fine was estimated as a percentage of Google’s annual earnings, according to the Interfax news agency.

Meta is scheduled to appear in court later today on the same allegations. A revenue-based fine has also been threatened for the corporation.

This isn’t the first time such a large fine has been levied. Earlier this year, a Russian court fined Alphabet Inc.’s Google $28,085 for failing to remove illegal content. It also penalized Telegram, a Russian messaging service, 49,440 Euros at the time.

Previously, during Russia’s legislative elections, Apple and Google had removed a voting software made by Putin’s critic Alexei Navalny’s allies. Navalny has accused the IT companies of being “liars and hypocrites,” as well as “accomplices” of Putin.
