SOUTH AFRICAN SWIMMER TATJANA SCHOENMAKER BAGS SILVER AT TOKYO OLYMPICS

Tatjana Schoenmaker won silver in the women’s 100m breaststroke at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday morning, kicking off an all-female two-medal haul for Team SA.

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, has congratulated Tatjana Schoenmaker for winning a silver medal in the women’s 100m breaststroke final at the Tokyo Olympics.

“Congratulations Tatjana Schoenmaker on your momentous achievement in becoming the first female South African swimmer to win an Olympic medal in over 20 years and for elevating women in sport globally. We are exceptionally proud of you. Keep flying the South African flag high,” the Minister said on Tuesday.

Schoenmaker touched in 1min 05.22sec — her slowest time in her three swims at these Games — to finish behind American teenager Lydia Jacoby in 1:04.95.

Defending champion Lilly King of the US was third in 1:05.54.

Schoenmaker is the first SA woman to win a Games swimming medal since Penny Heyns at Sydney 2000.
