VIRUS CASES IN AFRICA SURPASS 720,600, DEATH TOLL CROSSES 15,000

The total number of coronavirus cases in Africa reached 720,622 on Monday, the Africa Centres for Diseases Control and Prevention said on Monday.

At least 15,155 patients have died across 54 countries in the continent, it said, adding 382,857 patients have so far recovered.

The Southern Africa has so far registered 377,900 cases, North Africa 137,200, West Africa 107,700, East Africa 54,700 and Central Africa 43,100.

In terms of death toll, North Africa has seen 5,900 fatalities, Southern Africa 5,300, West Africa 1,700, East Africa 1,400 and Central Africa 858.

Since first appearing in China last December, the novel coronavirus has spread to at least 188 countries and regions. The US, Brazil, India and Russia are currently the countries hardest hit in the world.

The pandemic has killed over 606,200 people worldwide, with more than 14.5 million confirmed cases, according to figures compiled by US’ Johns Hopkins University. Over 8.13 million people have recovered from the disease.
