10 MOST IMPORTANT EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR 2024 INCLUDES AI

The World Economic Forum (WEF) unveiled its Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2024 report this week. Leading the list is “artificial intelligence (AI) for scientific discovery,” which has revolutionized research, especially in health-related areas, providing new insights into diseases.

The report highlights AI’s significant impact on researchers’ understanding of new materials and human biology. Following AI, “privacy-enhancing technologies” secured the second spot for their role in protecting user data and enabling secure data sharing, particularly beneficial in medical research through “synthetic data.”

Ranked third is “reconfigurable intelligent surfaces,” a technology that converts ordinary walls into surfaces with embedded wireless communication components. Fourth on the list are “high-altitude platform stations,” such as aircraft and balloons, which expand mobile network access to remote regions, connecting approximately 2.6 billion people worldwide.

“Integrated sensing and communication,” enabling simultaneous data sensing and transmission through 6G networks, is fifth. This technology supports monitoring systems for agriculture, environmental conservation, and urban planning.

“Immersive technologies” like virtual and augmented reality, ranked sixth, have accelerated advancements in infrastructure, enhancing accuracy, safety, and sustainability for professionals. “Elastocalorics,” a sustainable cooling solution that releases and absorbs heat under mechanical stress, is seventh, addressing the growing need for cooling solutions due to rising global temperatures.

Eighth on the list are “carbon-capturing microbes,” engineered organisms that convert emissions into biofuel, offering a potential solution to climate change. “Alternative livestock feeds,” derived from single-cell proteins, algae, and food waste, are ninth, providing sustainable feed options.

Rounding out the top ten is “genomics,” the use of genetically engineered organs for transplants, offering hope to millions awaiting transplants.
