Mon 06 December 2021:

Animal protection organizations said Monday that around 100 dead cats were discovered in the home of a retired man in southern France.

The volunteers were alerted by the niece of the 81-year-old who entered his house on Sunday after he was taken to hospital in Nice on the French Riviera and discovered the lifeless pets.

According to the regional daily Nice-Matin, the majority of the dead cats were kept in enclosed plastic or wooden containers.

In addition to the cats, remains of squirrels and rodents, as well as a dog’s jaw, were discovered in and around the residence.

Over 20 very malnourished cats were saved alive from the premises and given to vets or placed in foster homes.

“Judging from their positions most of the cats were already dead when they were put in these boxes,” Philippe Desjacques, president of the La Tribu du Fourmilier association, told AFP.

“But we think that at least two were locked in alive.” The mangled remains of one cat were found on the living room sofa, partly devoured by other cats.

Desjacques believes the elderly was suffering from Noah syndrome, a condition in which people amass a huge number of animals, frequently out of loneliness, and are unable to care for them.

Noah syndrome is a category of the Diogenes syndrome that describes people hoarding objects.

According to Desjacques, animal protection organizations will bring criminal charges against the individual for animal maltreatment and negligence.
