Thu 13 October 2022:

A bomb detonated on a military bus close to Damascus, killing at least 18 soldiers and injuring another 27, according to Syrian state media,

A military source was quoted by the state news agency SANA as saying, “A military bus in Damascus countryside was targeted this morning by a terrorist detonation with an explosive device that was planted in advance.”

The explosion took place on Thursday in the al-Saboura area of the countryside of Damascus, on a highway leading to the Lebanese capital, Beirut, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor based in Britain.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, and Syrian authorities made no comments.

It was one of a series of attacks in recent months against Syrian troops not on an active front line.

In June, a bus attack claimed by the ISIL (ISIS) armed group killed 13 soldiers in the northern province of Raqqa.

ISIL, which continues to operate in southern and central Syria despite having lost territorial control of the nation since 2019, has previously been held responsible for such attacks by Syrian authorities.

Hundreds of thousands of people have died in the country’s 11-year conflict, which began when the government brutally suppressed pro-democracy protests.

Syria has been divided into control zones as a result of the conflict, with President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and allies holding sway over the majority of the country. Analysts, however, worry that the opposition fighters will rise again.
