Mon 23 May 2022:

According to AFP, a total of 37 new cases of monkeypox have been discovered in England and Scotland, bringing the overall number of cases to 57.

The UK Health Security Agency and Public Health Scotland reported 36 confirmed cases in England and one north of the border.

According to the UKHSA, high-risk contact cases of confirmed patients who have not tested positive or displayed symptoms should now be isolated for up to 21 days.

It has also bought supplies of smallpox vaccine, which is being offered to close contacts to reduce the risk of symptomatic infection and severe illness.

On May 7, the UK reported its first incidence of monkeypox in a patient who had recently returned from Nigeria, where the disease is endemic.

Last week, health officials reported that additional cases were not linked to travel and that there appeared to be community transmission.

They noted that the risk to the general public remained extremely low.
