4,000 DEAD BODIES STOLEN AND RESOLD IN CHINA FOR ILLEGAL DENTAL GRAFTS

Sat 10 August 2024:

Chinese authorities are currently investigating a crime ring suspected of stealing over 4,000 corpses from crematoriums and medical labs to harvest bones for illegal dental grafts. Allogeneic grafts, typically sourced from consenting patients during operations like hip replacements, have reportedly been the focus of this operation.

A Beijing law firm president disclosed that police in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi province, are spearheading the investigation. An official described the crime ring’s activities as “stealing and reselling corpses for profit,” according to Chinese media reports. In a dramatic turn of events, police have confiscated over 18 tonnes of bones and more than 34,000 semi-finished and finished products linked to the syndicate.

This case has reignited scrutiny on China’s state-run funeral industry, which has already been marred by corruption scandals. So far, over 70 individuals have been detained in connection with the case, with allegations that crematorium workers were colluding with the crime ring to dismember and sell the stolen bones.

Synthetic Bone Manufacturers Benefit Amid Scandal

As the crackdown on the human bone trafficking syndicate continues, the demand for synthetic bone substitutes has soared, leading to a stock market rally in China. On August 9, Allgens Medical Science and Technology’s shares jumped by the 20 percent daily limit in Shanghai, while Shandong Weigao Orthopaedic Device’s stocks saw a 15 percent surge before closing with a 1.2 percent gain.

Wang Chen, a partner at Xufunds Investment Management in Shanghai, explained that some traders are capitalizing on the scandal by investing in substitute products, anticipating increased demand. “Some people are taking advantage of the scandal to buy on the news,” Wang noted, emphasizing the current economic environment’s influence on this trading strategy.
