Thu 04 August 2022:

On Thursday, Tokyo’s defense minister, said, China’s ballistic missiles are believed to have landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone for the first time, Reuters reports.

“Five of the nine ballistic missiles launched by China are believed to have landed within Japan’s EEZ,” Nobuo Kishi told reporters, as China holds massive military drills in the waters around Taiwan.

Taiwan is close to Okinawa, the southernmost island of Japan. It was the first time, according to Kishi, that Chinese ballistic missiles had entered Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Beyond Japan’s territorial seas, the EEZ stretches up to 200 nautical miles from its coast.

According to Kishi, the Japanese side estimated that nine missiles were fired.

China is holding its largest-ever military exercises around Taiwan.
The show of force was sparked by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the self-ruled island, despite stern warnings from Beijing.

According to the Chinese military, the drills included a “conventional missile firepower attack” in the waters to the east of Taiwan.
