Thu 26 September 2024:
Some 625,000 “deeply traumatised” Palestinian children in Gaza are living among the rubble, while thousands more are suffering under increased Israeli attacks in the occupied West Bank, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said yesterday.
“While nearly 625,000 deeply traumatised girls and boys are out of school and living in the rubble in Gaza, many children in the West Bank suffer from escalating violence that disrupts their lives and education.”
In a post on X yesterday, UNRWA confirmed that “Palestinian children in the #Gaza Strip and the #WestBank have endured terrible losses over the past year.”
this comes after it warned in a previous post that “Even before the war in #Gaza, most families were struggling to feed their young children as they prepared for their first year of school,” adding, “Nearly 12 months into the war, we have seen alarming increases in malnutrition, disease, and death.”

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has left thousands of children traumatized, with many experiencing severe emotional and psychological distress. Constant airstrikes, bombings, and the loss of loved ones have created an environment of fear and uncertainty for the youngest victims of war. Humanitarian organizations report that children are struggling with nightmares, anxiety, and symptoms of PTSD, as their homes, schools, and playgrounds have turned into war zones.
According to UNICEF, around 1.9 million people – about 9 in 10 of Gaza’s population – are estimated to have been internally displaced. Half of them children. They do not have enough access to water, food, fuel and medicine. Their homes have been destroyed; their families torn apart. Many children have been displaced multiple times, and have lost homes, parents and loved ones. They need to be protected, along with the remaining services that they rely on, including medical facilities and shelter.
The lack of safe spaces, medical resources, and mental health support further compounds the crisis. International agencies are calling for urgent action to address the humanitarian needs and protect Gaza’s children from further harm.
