90% OF GAZA’S POPULATION RELIES ON AID AND SURVIVES ON ONE MEAL A DAY: UNRWA

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has said that humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip remain catastrophic despite the ceasefire, warning that Israeli restrictions on aid are preventing any meaningful improvement.

UNRWA spokesperson Adnan Abu Hasna confirmed that Israel continues to block the entry of the agency’s international staff and restrict the flow of humanitarian supplies, leaving around 6,000 food trucks stranded at border crossings.

Abu Hasna said that more than 90 per cent of Gaza’s population now relies entirely on humanitarian assistance, with many families receiving only one meal every 24 hours. He noted that although an average of 170 aid trucks are entering Gaza daily, the figure is still far below the minimum needed to meet basic requirements.

UNRWA currently manages 100 shelters housing more than 80,000 displaced people, while continuing to provide remote education to around 300,000 students and in-person lessons to 50,000 others under extremely difficult conditions.

According to the agency, approximately 48,000 children are attending makeshift classes in 330 temporary learning spaces across 59 shelters. Many are forced to sit on the cold ground due to a lack of desks or chairs, which severely hampers the learning process and affects children’s sense of safety and stability.

The situation comes amid the ongoing humanitarian collapse triggered by Israel’s war on Gaza, which began on 7 October 2023. The widespread bombardment and destruction have rendered many schools and educational facilities unusable, prompting UNRWA to convert emergency shelters into temporary classrooms to address the urgent educational needs of displaced children.
