Tue 07 December 2021:
Around 900 bison in Yellowstone National Park in the United States will be allowed to be hunted, quarantined, or murdered in the next months, according to authorities.
According to a report, the order was issued to prevent the bacterial disease brucellosis from spreading from bison to cattle over the winter.
Another 200 bison may be trapped or slain if the target number of bison is not reached later in the winter, according to tribe, state, and federal officials.
Around 5,000 bison inhabit the grounds of Yellowstone National Park.
Bison tend to depart Yellowstone in the winter and migrate to Montana. They run the risk of infecting animals with brucellosis here.
Although brucellosis is uncommon in humans, it can pose a serious threat to cattle. Cows may abort their calves as a result of this disease.
According to recent counts, the bison population is increasing, therefore park officials are considering culling them. It’s possible that it’ll level off following spring calving.
Bison hunts will be conducted outside of Yellowstone National Park by Native American tribes and the state of Montana.
