The Afghan interim government’s National Defense Ministry has turned a former key U.S. military base known as NKC (New Kabul Compound) into a hospital to provide medical treatment for those crippled by the U.S.-led forces during 20 years of military occupation of Afghanistan.

Situated next to the U.S. embassy in downtown Kabul, the NKC had served as the main military command and control center of the U.S. forces during 20 years of the foreign troops’ presence in Afghanistan ended in August 2021.

“This hospital is an equipped and advanced health center that can conduct various operations including nerve surgery, congenital malformation and making artificial parts of the human body,” Defense Minister Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid said in his opening remarks.

The NKC building was formally incorporated with the main Afghan 400-bed military hospital, known as Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan Hospital, on Thursday.
