Death toll surpasses 18,000, while around 523,500 patients have recovered, says Africa CDC
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – Coronavirus cases reached 871,970 in Africa on Wednesday, according to a daily update by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
At least 18,475 people have died of the virus across 54 countries on the continent, the latest figures showed, while 523,475 patients have recovered.
Southern Africa has recorded 479,600 cases, North Africa 152,800, West Africa 123,100, East Africa 70,600, and Central Africa 45,800.
Some 7,700 people have lost their lives to the virus in Southern Africa, 6,500 in North Africa, 1,900 in West Africa, 1,600 in East Africa and 896 in Central Africa.
Since first appearing in China last December, the novel coronavirus has spread to at least 188 countries and regions. The US, Brazil, India, and Russia are currently the countries hardest hit in the world.
COVID-19 has killed over 660,700 people worldwide, with more than 16.75 million confirmed cases, according to figures compiled by the US’ Johns Hopkins University. Nearly 9.76 million people have recovered from the disease.
