Fri 28 March 2025:
Somalia said Thursday that it received a large shipment of military equipment from the African Union.
“The Federal Republic of Somalia received a substantial shipment of military equipment from the African Union on Thursday, including armored vehicles, helmets and vests, an armored personnel carrier, fuel and water tankers, engines, medical supplies and other essential resources,” the Foreign Ministry said on Facebook.
The shipment is “aimed at bolstering the country’s security infrastructure and contributing to regional stability,” it said.
Somalia extended “its heartfelt appreciation to the African Union for its continued and invaluable support, which strengthens regional security, supports institutional development and advances counterterrorism efforts, reaffirming the shared dedication to fostering long-term stability, resilience and progress across the continent,” the ministry added.
On Dec. 27, 2024, the UN Security Council approved a resolution authorizing the deployment of a new African Union mission in Somalia to replace an earlier AU force starting in early 2025, with the goal of combating al-Shabaab militants.
The new mission is called the African Union Stabilization Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), and it will operate for an initial period of one year.

The Somalia crisis is a complex humanitarian and security crisis driven by decades of conflict, political instability, and climate-related disasters. Since the collapse of its central government in 1991, Somalia has faced ongoing civil war from groups like Al-Shabaab, and weak governance.
Al-Shabaab controls parts of Somalia, carrying out deadly attacks on government forces, and international peacekeepers. It enforces strict Sharia law in areas under its control and has targeted neighboring countries like Kenya. Despite Somali and international military efforts, the group remains a major threat, contributing to Somalia’s instability and worsening humanitarian conditions.
Sharia law is a religious legal system derived from Islamic teachings but Al-Shabaab applies an extreme version of it. This includes harsh punishments such as amputations, executions, and bans on music, entertainment, and certain social activities.
Somalia also facing extreme droughts and floods, worsened by climate change, have led to widespread food shortages, displacing millions and putting millions more at risk of famine. Humanitarian aid efforts are often hindered by insecurity and limited resources. Piracy along the Somali coast and regional conflicts further complicate the situation.
Despite international efforts to stabilize the country, Somalia continues to struggle with poverty, violence, and instability, making it one of the world’s most pressing humanitarian crises.
