Mon 18 July 2022:
An early warning system was introduced by the African Union (AU) on Saturday with the goal of averting conflicts and promoting peace on the continent.
In addition to preventing conflicts on the continent, the Inter-Regional Knowledge Exchange on Early Warning and Conflict Prevention (I-RECKE) will be tasked with identifying and communicating threats to peace, according to AU Deputy Chairperson Monique Nsanzabaganwa, who spoke at the platform’s inauguration on the sidelines of the Executive Council’s 41st Ordinary Session.
The I-RECKE platform is expected to build resilience and stability on the continent and enhance information sharing among member countries, Nsanzabaganwa said, adding that member countries should invest in their own early warning systems due to the complexity of threats to peace.
Bankole Adeoye, AU commissioner for political affairs, peace and security, said the platform will use latest technologies to provide early warnings to member countries on threats to peace.
According to him, the continent faces a number of obstacles to peace, requiring the development of a number of strategies to deal with the conflicts.
