Alcohol consumption in Iran, though officially banned under Islamic law, still occurs illegally, often leading to serious health risks and deaths. Because alcohol is illegal, the underground market is filled with homemade or bootleg alcohol, which can be dangerously contaminated with toxic substances like methanol.

Methanol poisoning has caused numerous fatalities in the country, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when misinformation led some to believe that consuming alcohol could prevent the virus.
Despite the prohibition, alcohol-related deaths are a concern, with dozens of fatalities reported each year from methanol poisoning and other alcohol-related health issues. Iran’s healthcare system has faced the challenge of treating these poisonings, often with limited resources. In addition to health risks, those caught consuming or possessing alcohol face legal penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or corporal punishment.
This combination of legal, health, and social challenges makes alcohol consumption in Iran a dangerous and sometimes deadly practice.
