Biden administration sharply rejects claim by Yair Netanyahu
The Biden administration on Sunday sharply rejected conspiracy theories spread by Yair Netanyahu, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son, concerning allegations that the U.S. has been funding protests against the judicial overhaul in hopes of leading to the prime minister’s downfall.
Officials close to Netanyahu have been increasingly emboldened in sharing such theories, rooted in right-wing media reports alleging that the State Department provides grant money to the Movement for Quality Government, one of the key organizations behind the mass protest movements.
“These accusations are completely false,” a State Department spokesperson said.
“[Movement for Quality Government] received a modest grant from the State Department that was initiated during the previous administration,” the spokesperson noted, adding that “the last disbursal of funds came in September of 2022, well before the last Israeli election.”
The spokesperson added that the grant in question “supported an educational program for Jerusalem schools that supplemented their civic studies curriculum.”
