Tue 11 June 2024:
Apple has introduced a range of new AI-driven features, developed in collaboration with OpenAI, as the tech giant seeks to dispel perceptions that it lags behind in the AI race.
During a nearly two-hour presentation at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino, California, CEO Tim Cook and other executives unveiled “Apple Intelligence,” highlighting upgrades such as an enhanced Siri powered by ChatGPT, customizable emojis based on language prompts, and email summaries generated by Apple’s in-house technology.
Cook emphasized that the advancements represent “the next big step for Apple,” distinguishing the company from competitors like Microsoft and Google by prioritizing privacy. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, assured that AI models would be integrated into iPhones, iPads, and Macs while maintaining user privacy.
These features will be available for free in the upcoming iOS 18 operating system, slated for release later this year, but will require newer device models.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership on social media. Conversely, Elon Musk, founder of OpenAI rival xAI, criticized the collaboration, raising concerns about user data security and labeling it a “security violation.”
Despite the announcements, investor reaction was lukewarm, with Apple shares dropping nearly 2 percent.
