ARAB COALITION LAUNCHES MILITARY OPERATIONS IN SANAA

Middle East World

Wed 26 January 2022:

According to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Arab Coalition has begun military operations in Sanaa and numerous Yemeni governorates.

It comes after a deadly drone-and-missile assault by Yemen’s Iran-backed rebels on the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, which drew threats of reprisals as well as international condemnation.

Two more rebel missiles were intercepted over Abu Dhabi on Monday.

The UAE is part of the coalition fighting on the side of Yemen’s internationally recognised government.

Tensions are at an all-time high with Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis, who have repeatedly attempted to assault civilian targets in Saudi Arabia and, more recently, the United Arab Emirates.

The Arab Coalition destroyed a ballistic missile launched toward Dhahran al-Janub, Saudi Arabia, on January 24. Meanwhile, the UAE announced that it has shot down two Houthi missiles launched at Abu Dhabi just days after the January 17 attack, which used cruise and ballistic missiles as well as drones and killed three people.

Shrapnel from the destroyed missile fired at Saudi Arabia landed in the town’s industrial zone and only material losses were reported, SPA detailed.

UAE’s Dr. Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic adviser to the country’s president, is among many of the local officials in conversation with global representatives to find a solution to the Houthi issue.

On January 21, Gargash declared that the UAE has a “legal and moral right” to defend itself against terrorist acts by the Houthi militia during a call with Hans Grundberg, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen.

Internet returns to Yemen

On Tuesday, web monitor NetBlocks said internet was “being restored” in the country and several social media users and correspondents in the capital Sanaa and port city Hodeidah reported they were back online shortly after midnight.

An attack by the Saudi-led coalition that targeted a telecoms facility in Hodeidah late on Thursday killed three children and was blamed for knocking out the internet nationwide.

The air raid coincided with an attack on a prison in rebel-held Saada which left at least 70 people dead and wounded more than 100.

The Saudi-led coalition denied bombing the prison.
