Dozens of civilians have been killed in heavy fighting between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group (RSF), a Sudanese medical organization says on Twitter.
At least 56 civilians have been killed, the Sudanese Doctors Union said. In addition, nearly 600 people, including soldiers, have been injured and brought to hospitals and other care centres, dozens of whom are in danger of losing their lives.
RSF advisor claims forces in control of large swathes of capital Khartoum
A legal advisor to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohammed al-Mokhtar al-Nour, has said that there RSF forces were in control of several strategic sites in the capital city, Khartoum, Omdurman and Darfur as well as Merowe Airport in the north.
“We cannot determine when the battle will end but the RSF has made major progress,” said al-Nour.
He claimed that 90 percent of Khartoum was under RSF control, while only 10 percent of the city remained in the hands of the Sudanese military.
Independent Press could not verify these claims as the situation on the ground remains very fluid.
Sudanese Red Crescent says hospitals overwhelmed by growing number of wounded
A spokesperson for the Sudanese Red Crescent, Osama Othman Abubakr, has said that hospitals in several areas affected by the fighting in Sudan were struggling to respond to the situation as the number of the wounded continues to rise.
“We are seeking to evacuate wounded people to other facilities as hospitals in the hotspots of the fighting are getting overwhelmed and cannot handle the growing numbers,” he told Al Jazeera.
Revolutionary forces call for immediate ceasefire, dialogue
Mohiuddin Ibrahim, a member of the Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC), an alliance that spearheaded protests that deposed President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, has condemned the escalation of tensions between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
Ibrahim called for dialogue and an immediate ceasefire.
Sudanese telecoms provider MTN blocks internet services
Sudan’s MTN telecommunications company has blocked internet services in the country on the orders of the government telecommunications regulator, two officials from the company said.
