Mon 21 February 2022:
Following nearly two years of strict coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions on international travel and lockdown, Australia fully reopened its international borders to individuals who have been vaccinated against the deadly virus on Monday (February 21).
More than 50 international flights will arrive in the country on the first day following reopening. At least 27 planes are expected to arrive in Sydney.
People are eager to see their families and friends again, as the country’s tourist and hospitality businesses prepare to rebound after being badly harmed by the Covid-related restrictions.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters, “It is a very exciting day, one that I have been looking forward to for a long time, from the day that I first shut that border right at the start of the pandemic.”
Tourism is one of Australia’s most important sectors, and the virus crippled the country’s economy. For the uninitiated, Australia’s tourist industry is valued at over $43 billion dollars and employs roughly 5% of the country’s workforce.
The Omicron coronavirus variant outbreak in Australia is thought to have peaked, with hospital admissions progressively declining over the last three weeks.
Since the emergence of Omicron in late November, the majority of Australia’s pandemic total of roughly 2.7 million confirmed cases has been found. The total number of people that died was 4,929.
