The flag of Azerbaijan has been included in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest flag flown in the world.
“The flag of Azerbaijan is included in the Book of Records as the largest flag in the world. Its width is 36 meters (118 feet), its length is 72 meters (236 feet), and its total weight exceeds 500 kilograms (1102 pounds),” Afsana Mehdiyeva, an official representative of the Baku Boulevard Department, said on Friday.
Mehdiyeva said the flag raised at the National Flag Square in the capital Baku was officially included in the Guinness Book of Records on Nov. 6.
Earlier, the flag had already been entered into the Book of Records for the height of the flagpole, but this was before the closure of the Square for repairs in 2017, she added.
“At the moment, the new certificate is related to the size of the flag installed on the Square. The inclusion of our flag in the Book of Records has already been officially confirmed,” the official said.
According to Guinness World Records, six master tailors sewed the flag in two weeks.
Here are some of the largest flags in the world based on size and location:
- The United Arab Emirates – In 2017, the UAE unveiled a record-breaking flag that measured approximately 500,000 square feet (47,000 square meters) to celebrate National Day. It is one of the largest flags ever created in terms of sheer fabric area.
- Romania – Romania’s flag, unfurled in 2013 near Bucharest, was one of the largest flags by area, covering 349,000 square feet (32,516 square meters). The flag weighed about five tons and required around 200 people to roll it out.
- Qatar – To mark its National Day in 2013, Qatar created a flag spanning 294,000 square feet (27,000 square meters). It was laid out in the Al-Sadd district of Doha and recognized as one of the largest flags globally.
- Mexico – Mexico’s monumental flags, raised in various cities, stand on some of the tallest flagpoles globally (up to 344 feet). While the flags are large (about 50 by 94 feet), the focus is more on the towering poles than the flag’s area.
- Brazil – The Brazilian flag in Brasília is on a 100-meter (328-foot) flagpole, weighing about 600 kg and stretching over 280 square meters (3,000 square feet). The rotating flagpole allows the flag to move with the wind and be visible from miles away.
- India – India’s national flag in Attari, near the Wagah border with Pakistan, stands at 360 feet tall, making it one of the tallest flagpoles. The flag itself measures about 120 by 80 feet.
These flags are often symbolic, showcasing national pride or marking special events and are sometimes accompanied by world-record attempts.
