BEIJING OPPOSES EU ANTI-SUBSIDY TARIFFS ON CHINESE ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Asia World

Fri 30 August 2024:

China on Friday strongly opposed the anti-subsidy tariffs proposed by the EU on Chinese electric vehicles, local media reported.

China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) called the EU move trade protectionism and warned against disrupting global supply chains, according to the Global Times.

“Cooperation, not protectionism, is crucial for global industry stability and climate goals,” CCPIT said.

Early this year in June, the European Commission had announced additional custom duties of as much as 38.1% on Chinese electric vehicles.

Also criticizing Canada’s recent tariff hikes on Chinese electric vehicles, it said the move would undermine global trade norms.

Earlier this week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that his country will impose 100% tariffs on imports of Chinese electric vehicles.

China hits back at electric vehicle tariffs

Last week China opened an anti-subsidy probe into dairy imports from the European Union on Wednesday, stepping up tension with the bloc a day after Brussels published its revised tariff plan for China-made electric vehicles.

The move is widely seen as political payback for the EU’s investigation into Chinese EVs and follows earlier Chinese probes into imports of EU pork (announced on June 17 and worth nearly €3 billion last year) and brandies (on January 5 and worth €1.6 billion). In June, Beijing had threatened inquiries into dairy (€1.8 billion) and wine (€1.2 billion) as well.

The anti-subsidy investigation on dairy announced by China’s commerce ministry on Wednesday August 21), the latest in a series of Chinese probes this year into EU agricultural goods, will focus on various types of cheeses, milks and creams intended for human consumption.

China will examine 20 subsidy schemes from across the 27-strong bloc, specifically those from Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Ireland, and Romania, it said in a statement.
