Fri 28 June 2024:

In their first debate since the 2020 election, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump exchanged sharp barbs on a range of issues including global conflicts, immigration, and US democracy. Held at CNN’s studios in Atlanta, Georgia, the debate took place unusually early in the election cycle, before either candidate has been officially nominated by their party.

Polls show Biden and Trump in a tight race ahead of the November 5 elections. Critics particularly noted Biden’s performance as lackluster.

The debate covered numerous contentious topics:

  • Economy: Biden criticized Trump’s economic record, accusing him of fostering “corporate greed” and leaving the economy in chaos. Trump redirected the discussion to immigration, attacking Biden’s policies and claiming they overwhelm social services.
  • Abortion: Trump celebrated the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, calling it a win for state rights, but remained vague on specific restrictions. Biden defended his healthcare achievements, emphasizing efforts to lower prescription drug prices.
  • Immigration: Trump continued his anti-immigrant rhetoric, suggesting undocumented migrants threaten safety. Biden dismissed these claims, but Trump doubled down, accusing Biden of allowing criminals into the country.
  • Global Conflicts: Trump suggested Russia would not have invaded Ukraine under his presidency and criticized Biden’s handling of the situation. Biden called Putin a “war criminal” and emphasized his strong stance against Russian aggression.
  • US Support for Israel: Both candidates expressed strong support for Israel amid its conflict in Gaza. Biden defended his ceasefire plan, while Trump criticized Biden’s approach as weak and overly sympathetic to Palestinians.

In their closing remarks, Biden highlighted progress in healthcare and taxation during his tenure and pledged to continue efforts to lower inflation. Trump painted a grim picture of the nation under Biden, promising to “make it great again.”

The debate set the stage for a contentious election season, reflecting deep divisions on key issues facing the nation.
