Fri 20 September 2024:
U.S. President Joe Biden will welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House on Sept. 26 to discuss the ongoing war with Russia, the White House announced Thursday. The high-stakes meeting will focus on Ukraine’s strategic plans and continued U.S. support in the face of Russian aggression.
In a statement, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said the leaders “will discuss the state of the war between Russia and Ukraine, including Ukraine’s strategic planning and U.S. support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.” Zelensky will also hold a separate meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris, who is currently running for president following Biden’s exit from the 2024 race.

Commitment to Ukraine’s Victory
Both Biden and Harris are expected to emphasize their unwavering support for Ukraine. Jean-Pierre stated, “Biden and Harris will emphasize their unshakeable commitment to stand with Ukraine until it prevails in this war,” highlighting the U.S. dedication to Ukraine’s success in its conflict with Russia.
The talks come as Zelensky continues to press Western allies to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons, arguing it would help end the war more quickly. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory with Western-supplied arms could lead to NATO’s direct involvement in the conflict, shifting the war’s dynamics significantly.
Russian Advances and Evacuations
Meanwhile, Russia claimed to have captured the Ukrainian village of Heorhiivka in the Donetsk region, continuing its offensive. The Russian Defense Ministry announced this latest advance in eastern Ukraine, where Moscow’s forces are engaged on multiple fronts. In southern Russia, two settlements near the Ukrainian border in the Kursk region were evacuated as Ukrainian forces pushed forward in their counteroffensive.
