BRAZILIAN SUPREME COURT SUSPENDS ELON MUSK’S X

Brazil’s Supreme Court has ordered the suspension of the social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, across the country. The ruling, issued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, comes after the platform repeatedly ignored Brazilian court orders and regulations, leading to accusations of fostering an environment of “lawless land” on social networks, especially during the critical period of the 2024 municipal elections.

Justice Moraes highlighted that X has been a breeding ground for hateful and racist speech, threatening the integrity of Brazil’s democratic processes. Despite a direct order on August 28 for Musk to appoint a legal representative in Brazil, the tech mogul failed to comply, prompting the court’s decisive move to suspend the platform.

Crackdown on Disinformation and Bolsonaro’s Allies on X

The Brazilian government has been at odds with X for refusing to remove posts spreading disinformation and hateful content. These actions have led to fines exceeding $3 million, particularly targeting accounts of allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro, accused of plotting against the current administration. The Supreme Court has instructed the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) to disconnect the platform within 24 hours, with tech giants like Apple and Google given five days to remove the X app from their stores.

Elon Musk responded to the suspension with scathing remarks, labeling Justice Moraes as an “evil dictator cosplaying as a judge” on his platform. However, he has yet to formally address the recent fines or inquiries from Brazil’s Judiciary, as the legal standoff escalates.
