BRICS IS NOT ANTI-AMERICAN, SAYS RUSSIA

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Thursday that BRICS was not an anti-American group and that it will not listen to “language of threats and manipulation”.

On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened BRICS countries with additional 10% tariffs after calling the bloc “anti-American.”

“BRICS is not an anti-American association. Nothing on the BRICS agenda contains an anti-American component,” Ryabkov told reporters in Moscow.

“The language of threats and manipulation, if you will, about what is or is not happening, including on the BRICS platform, is not the sort of language that should to be spoken to the participants of this association.”

BRICS is an economic bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, formed to boost trade and influence global markets, representing about 40% of the world’s population and a growing share of GDP. It’s been expanding, with countries like Egypt and Iran joining recently, aiming to counter Western-dominated institutions like the IMF.

Trump’s stance on BRICS is skeptical; he sees it as a challenge to U.S. economic dominance, especially with talks of a BRICS currency to rival the dollar. He’s pushed tariffs and sanctions, particularly against China and Russia, to curb their influence. In 2024, he warned BRICS against de-dollarization, threatening trade penalties.

His “America First” policy clashes with BRICS’ multilateral goals, favoring bilateral deals over global coalitions. BRICS nations, meanwhile, are diversifying away from dollar reliance, with China and India leading trade in local currencies. Trump’s approach could escalate tensions if BRICS pushes harder for financial independence.
