Mon 07 March 2022:

According to The Sun tabloid on Monday, British interior minister Priti Patel intends to set up a new scheme to allow more migrants escaping Ukraine’s turmoil to enter the country.

Ukrainians have flocked to Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and other countries in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion. Over 1.5 million people have left Europe’s fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War Two, according to the United Nations.

Although the UK has already announced immigration programmes for those with family in the country or a willing sponsor, opposition politicians have criticized the government for not doing more in comparison to its European counterparts.

“I’m urgently escalating our response to the growing humanitarian crisis,” Patel told The Sun, citing her own experience visiting the Polish border last week.

“I am now investigating the legal options to create a humanitarian route. This means anyone without ties to the UK fleeing the conflict in Ukraine will have a right to come to this nation.”

For up to three years, the European Union has agreed to provide temporary residency to Ukrainians fleeing the invasion, giving them access to job, social assistance, and housing.

On Sunday, France and the United Kingdom had a diplomatic spat over the treatment of Ukrainian refugees stranded in the French port of Calais.
