Fri 26 July 2024:
FBI Director Christopher Wray is facing backlash from Republicans following his testimony about former President Donald Trump potentially being hit by shrapnel during an assassination attempt. Controversial Testimony on Trump’s Injury
When questioned about the FBI’s investigation into the July 14 shooting, Wray stated, “I think with respect to former President Trump there’s some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel that, you know, hit his ear.” He emphasized that the investigation led by the FBI is “very much ongoing.”

Incident Details and Immediate Reactions
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris informed the committee that Thomas Matthew Crooks fired eight rounds during a Republican rally in Butler County before being killed by counter-snipers. Trump sustained a wound to his right ear, and Corey Comperatore, 50, died shielding his family from the shooter’s bullets.
Republican Response
Republican Representative Ronny Jackson, a former White House doctor, who examined Trump’s ear, criticized Wray’s testimony as a “politically motivated move.” Jackson claimed in a post on X that Wray had “weaponised his office” to undermine Trump, stating that Trump’s gunshot wound came “less than a quarter of an inch from entering his head, and struck the top of his right ear.”
Security Oversight and Resignations
The FBI was not responsible for security at the rally, which has led to less scrutiny compared to the Secret Service’s role in the security lapses. On Tuesday, Kimberly Cheatle resigned as the Secret Service director. Despite Wray testifying that his interactions had been “completely professional,” Trump demanded his resignation on Truth Social, accusing him of “lying to Congress.”
