Canada could be on the brink of a federal election as the Conservative Party prepares to introduce a no-confidence vote next week, according to media reports. The move, led by Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, seeks to oust Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government, which is languishing in public opinion polls.

The Conservatives need the support of either the Bloc Quebecois or the New Democratic Party (NDP) to secure enough votes to bring down the government. If successful, this could trigger an election. Poilievre has promised to force an election at the first opportunity, riding high on polling numbers while the Liberals struggle for public favor.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau set the stage for the potential no-confidence vote by declaring Tuesday, Sept. 24, as Opposition Day. This gives Poilievre a chance to introduce the motion in the legislature, which, if supported, would be voted on the following day. However, without backing from the Bloc Quebecois or NDP, the motion will likely fail.

Bloc Quebecois Declines to Support Conservatives
Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet has already dismissed the possibility of siding with the Conservatives. “I’m not in the business of replacing Justin Trudeau with Pierre Poilievre,” Blanchet told CBC, signaling that his party will not help topple the Liberal government.

The stance of the NDP remains uncertain. Their decision could make or break the no-confidence vote, but they have yet to indicate if they will align with the Conservatives. Trudeau has not commented on the looming challenge, though it was his decision to hand Tuesday over to the opposition, allowing Poilievre the opportunity to initiate the motion.
