CHARLES III IS PROCLAIMED KING

News Desk World

Sat 10 September 2022:

King Charles III was formally proclaimed Britain‘s new sovereign on Saturday during a meeting of the so-called Accession Council.

Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday at her Scottish residence of Balmoral Castle, at the age of 96.

Charles automatically became king upon the death of his mother, but was formally announced in the role on Saturday in a ceremony televised for the first time.

The public proclamation of King Charles’ ascension to the throne is being read aloud in front of the King’s, previously the Queen’s, royal guard.

The public proclamations will continue to be made around the country for the next 24 hours or so.

At 1pm, flags will be raised to full mast for a day to celebrate the accession of a new monarch.

Meanwhile MPs will head back to the House of Commons for a rare Saturday sitting. They will hear more tributes from members to the late Queen before having the option of taking a new oath of loyalty to King Charles III.

MPs sign the royal proclamation

MPs from both sides of the house have signed the royal proclamation recognising Charles as King.

Members of the council were invited to sign the document at the end of the ceremony by the leader of the Privy Council, Penny Mordaunt.

Among those pictured signing the document were Deputy Labour Leader Angela Rayner and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Now that Charles has officially been proclaimed as King, a new age has begun in the UK and the Commonwealth.

After 70 years, Queen Elizabeth’s reign has come to an end and Charles III is now monarch.
