Tue 15 April 2025:
China has accused the National Security Agency (NSA) of the United States of launching “advanced” cyberattacks during the Asian Winter Games in February.
It comes as the US government launches investigations into imports of computer chips, chip-making gear and pharmaceuticals as it takes further steps towards imposing more tariffs.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump hints at a temporary exemption on the auto industry from previously imposed levies.

China’s Foreign Ministry has accused the US of being behind “malicious cyber-behaviour”, saying this incident caused serious harm to infrastructure, defence, finance and personal information security.
The case first came to light when police in the northeastern city of Harbin posted on social media that they were looking for information regarding three Americans who they said were spies working for the US’s National Security Agency.
They named a particular office within that agency that they say has been involved in the past in hacking attempts of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei and a leading Chinese aviation university.
They said these individuals are wanted in relation to attacks that were made around the Winter Asian Games which took place in Harbin in February. They said they detected 270,000 cyberattacks in total, and they attributed two-thirds of those to actors within the US.
Interestingly, they also named two US universities – the University of California and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute – which they say were involved in this coordinated hacking attack.
Now, we often see the US making accusations against China, saying Beijing has been behind state-sponsored attacks on US infrastructure – it’s not often we get accusations the other way around, but we are increasingly seeing this kind of accusation from the Chinese government, especially as tensions escalate between the US and China.
And right now, the timing is interesting because this will only worsen tensions as both countries are engaged in this intensifying trade war.
