Sun 15 March 2026:

China on Friday approved its first implantable brain-computer interface device, marking a key milestone in the country’s push to compete with US firms in neurotechnology.

China’s drug regulator, the National Medical Products Administration, said it approved a brain implant developed by Neuracle Medical Technology for adult patients with partial paralysis caused by spinal cord injuries.

During clinical trials, patients using Neuracle’s brain-computer interface (BCI) showed improved ability to grasp and hold objects with their hands.

The company is among a growing number of Chinese startups developing BCI technologies that allow people to control computers and other devices with their minds, as firms seen as potential rivals to Elon Musk’s Neuralink gain momentum with regulatory backing and new investment.

The approval sparked a stock rally among several Hong Kong-listed companies linked to BCI technologies, with shares of Sanbo Hospital Management Group, Innovation Medical Management, and Nanjing Panda Electronics surging more than 10%.

Neuralink is a neurotechnology company founded by Elon Musk aiming to develop implantable brain-machine interfaces (BMIs). The core idea is to create a tiny, implantable chip that connects directly to the brain’s neurons via ultra-thin flexible threads. These threads can read electrical signals from neurons and also stimulate them.

The primary goal is to help people with severe paralysis or neurological disorders by restoring control over limbs, prosthetics, or computers simply by thinking. For example, a person with paralysis could control a robotic arm or type on a computer using only their brain signals.

Neuralink’s chip is designed to be implanted through a robotic surgery that minimizes damage to brain tissue. Once implanted, the chip wirelessly transmits brain activity data to external devices, enabling real-time brain-computer interaction.

Beyond medical applications, Elon Musk envisions Neuralink eventually enabling a symbiosis between humans and artificial intelligence, potentially enhancing cognitive abilities and memory.

Currently, Neuralink is in clinical trials testing its safety and efficacy in humans, with promising early results in enabling people to control devices with their thoughts.

In summary, Neuralink is a cutting-edge brain chip technology that reads and writes neural signals to restore function and potentially augment human cognition in the future.
