Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasized Saudi Arabia’s vital role in China’s diplomatic strategy, particularly in the Middle East, during a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday, as reported by state media.

“China puts the development of relations with Saudi Arabia as a priority in its overall diplomacy, especially in its Middle East diplomacy,” Li stated. He highlighted the strong mutual respect and trust between the two nations, reaffirming China’s commitment to supporting Saudi Arabia and enhancing their bilateral relationship by focusing on shared achievements and viewing each other’s progress as mutual opportunities.

Bin Salman acknowledged the depth of Saudi-China relations, describing the two countries as “dependable comprehensive strategic partners.”

Li’s visit to Riyadh, where he co-chaired the Fourth Meeting of the High-Level Chinese-Saudi Joint Committee with bin Salman, marked his first high-level trip to Saudi Arabia following China’s brokering of a peace agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran last year. Notably, China is Saudi Arabia’s second-largest oil importer, with bilateral trade between the two countries reaching approximately $106 billion in 2022.
