Houthi rebels, terrorism, and the most recent rebellion by the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Islah party have all presented the PLC with difficult political and security issues

A military source told Xinhua that ten pro-government soldiers and six terrorists were killed in a gunfight on Tuesday in the Abyan region of southwest Yemen.

On condition of anonymity, a local military source described how several heavily armed al-Qaida gunmen attacked a security post controlled by the recently hired Security Belt personnel, sparking violent confrontations in the seaside district of Ahwar.

The source added that a number of Security Belt soldiers were injured in addition to the fatalities.

Hours after the attack, the local security troops carried out a clearance operation to eliminate terrorists in the area, according to the source.

The number of terrorist attacks on the southern security forces in Yemen began to rise after the newly-formed Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) started to deploy forces in the oil-rich province of Shabwa and other neighboring areas.

The Houthi rebels, terrorism, and the most recent rebellion by the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Islah party have all presented the PLC with difficult political and security issues.

A significant anti-terror operation known as “ARROWS OF THE EAST” was initiated last month in the turbulent province of Abyan by the recently recruited southern soldiers in Yemen.

The security forces in the southern provinces of the country have been the target of numerous high-profile attacks by the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) network.
