Experts warn fragile healthcare systems in many nations could be overwhelmed in the face of a severe COVID-19 outbreak.
The World Health Organization (WHO) voiced alarm on Monday at the spread of COVID-19 in Africa, warning South Africa’s surging numbers could be a “precursor” for outbreaks across the continent.
“I am very concerned right now that we are beginning to see an acceleration of disease in Africa,” WHO’s emergencies chief Michael Ryan told a virtual news conference.
Until recently, Africa remained relatively unscathed by the pandemic compared with rising numbers in other parts of the world.
More than 540 additional infections, 8 fatalities reported in past 24 hours in Nigeria
ABUJA, Nigeria (AA) – More than 540 new coronavirus cases have taken the nationwide tally here to over 38,000, authorities announced Thursday.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said 543 more COVID-19 cases and eight fatalities were recorded in the country in the past 24 hours.
The case count now stands at 38,344, including 15,815 recoveries and 813 deaths, according to the NCDC.
The commercial capital Lagos, Federal Capital Territory, and southwestern Oyo state are the hardest-hit region in Nigeria.
Death toll continues to rise in Sudan
KHARTOUM, Sudan – Sudan reported more deaths and new infections Thursday from the coronavirus pandemic.
Health officials said two fatalities and 110 additional cases were registered, bringing its tally to 11,237, including 708 deaths.
The ministry said recoveries rose to 5,835 after 109 patients recovered.
Since originating in China last December, the COVID-19 pandemic has claimed more than 620,000 lives in 188 countries and regions.
More than 15 million cases have been reported worldwide, while an excess of 8.5 million patients have recovered, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
