Wed 11 September 2024:

The DA warned that they will leave the national unity government if President Ramaphosa signs the BELA into law SABC News reported.

On Friday, the President is scheduled to approve the Bill intended to enhance governance in South Africa’s education system.

DA leader John Steenhuisen says the Bill has constitutional implications for the right to mother-tongue education, amongst other issues. He has vowed to meet with the President before the planned signing ceremony on Friday.

Steenhuisen has vowed to meet with the president before the planned signing ceremony on Friday.

Earlier the Presidency said:

“The BELA Bill amends sections of the South African Schools Act of 1996 (SASA) and the Employment of Educators Act, 1998 (EEA) to account for developments in the education landscape since the enactment of the original legislation.

“The amendments are a response to court judgments that protect and give effect to the Bill of Rights,” the Presidency said in a statement.

But the DA says if the President proceeds with the signing of the Bill, despite its strong objections, he will be violating both the letter and spirit of the joint Statement of Intent that form the basis of the current GNU arrangement.
