Tue 27 August 2024:
A catastrophic dam collapse in northeastern Sudan has claimed the lives of at least 60 people as heavy rainfall continues to devastate the region. The Arbaat Dam, located north of Port Sudan, gave way on Sunday, triggering deadly floods that swept away homes and left many stranded.
Initially, the Sudanese Ministry of Health reported four deaths, but local news sources now confirm at least 60 fatalities. The UN has reported that 20 villages have been destroyed, leaving 50,000 people homeless. Many more are still missing as rescue efforts struggle with limited resources and mobile network outages.

Communities Trapped and Water Supplies Threatened
Witnesses describe harrowing scenes of families, elderly, and children trapped in vehicles as floodwaters surged. The collapse of the Arbaat Dam, a crucial water source for Port Sudan, threatens to create severe shortages of drinking water in the region.
Sudan has been grappling with heavy rainfall and flooding since late June, affecting over 317,000 people across 16 states. The ongoing civil conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has only deepened the crisis, displacing millions and worsening humanitarian conditions.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens with Cholera Outbreak
In addition to the flooding, Sudan is now battling a cholera outbreak as contaminated floodwaters spread disease. The death toll from the floods nationwide has risen to 132, with North Darfur, the River Nile, and West Darfur among the hardest-hit regions. The situation remains dire as the country faces compounding crises of war, famine, and disease.
