The death toll from the collapse of a school building in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, has increased to 22, according to officials and rescue workers. The two-story building, housing classrooms and staff offices, collapsed on Friday during exams, initially killing at least 12 students and teachers.
Rescue workers from the State Emergency Agency reported to Anadolu Agency that 22 bodies, including 18 students and four teachers, were recovered from the rubble by the end of the search and rescue operations on Friday.

Musa Ashoms, the commissioner for information and communication, confirmed the updated death toll and stated that the injured have been admitted to hospitals. “Currently, 154 people have been rescued from the debris. Sadly, 22 individuals have been confirmed deceased,” he said in a statement.
Ashoms added that the injured students and staff are receiving medical treatment at four hospitals in the city, with a total of 132 hospitalized out of the 154 victims.
The government has yet to provide a detailed breakdown of the deceased and injured. Joseph Ariyo, a relative of one of the deceased students, mentioned that the family has not yet received the victim’s body and is awaiting government directives.
Daramola Ekundayo, the school principal, reported that the building collapsed at around 11:30 a.m. (1130GMT) on Friday while about 200 students were taking exams supervised by a few teachers. He did not specify the number of teachers present in the building at the time of the incident.
