Fri 19 August 2022:
Following a prolonged period of dry weather with little rain and record temperatures, areas of Wales were formally declared drought on Friday, days after many districts in England.
North Ceredigion, Teifi, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthen, Swansea, Llanelli, Neath Port Talbot, and Bridgend are among the areas affected.
Water companies in the majority of Wales have already enforced water-use restrictions, including a hosepipe ban.
Drought was proclaimed throughout the majority of England last week, following the driest July since 1935.
Natural Resources Wales said the move was taken on Friday due to “the pressures the high temperatures and lack of significant rainfall have had on the environment”.
Natalie Hall, the body’s sustainable water manager, stated that the lack of water and heat “have put a huge strain on our rivers, reservoirs, and groundwater level.”
Between March and June, Wales, which is famed for its lush landscape, had 61 percent of its usual expected rain.
Thames Water, which serves 15 million people in London and some neighboring areas, announced on Wednesday that it would implement a hosepipe ban beginning August 24.
